This week Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre unveiled its 2025 season, packed with movie tie-ins, broadway transfers, and exclusive events set to take centre stage next year, here are 10 of our must see shows!
MOULIN ROUGE THE MUSICAL
Top of our list is MOULIN ROUGE THE MUSICAL based on Baz Luhrmann’s revolutionary film, which promises a theatrical celebration of truth, beauty, freedom and above all- love. Winner of 10 Tony awards including Best Musical, Best Director, and Best Choreography the film comes to life onstage, remixed in a new musical mash-up extravaganza. The production which embodies the spirit of the famed Parisian cabaret runs in Dublin opens on Nov 20th 2025, we can’t wait!
KINKY BOOTS
Based on the 2005 movie of the same name, KINKY BOOTS is a musical that took the world by storm. Having won every major best musical award, including the Tony® , The Grammy® and the Olivier Award. The show has toured the world and now this fabulous musical is making its way back to Ireland running at Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from July 15th. With a star cast including Strictly Come Dancing’s Johannes Radebe, Dan Partridge (Grease), Courtney Bowman (Six) Scott Paige (The Addams Family) and Newtion Matthews (Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical). This joy-filled sensation, based on a true story and hit movie, features Tony® and Grammy® winning music and lyrics by pop icon Cyndi Lauper, a hilarious and life-affirming book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is directed by Nikolai Foster (Grease and An Officer and a Gentleman).
CALAMITY JANE
Based on the much-loved Doris Day movie, this foot-stomping new production features all the sure-fire classic songs including The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), The Black Hills of Dakota, Just Blew in from the Windy City, and the Oscar-winning Secret Love.
Meet the fearless, gun slingin’ Calamity Jane – biggest mouth in Dakota territory and always up for a fight. She’ll charm you hog-eyed though, especially when trying to win the heart of the dashing Lieutenant Gilmartin, or shooting insults at the notorious Wild Bill Hickok. But when the men of Deadwood fall hard for Chicago stage star Adelaid Adams, Calamity struggles to keep her jealousy holstered. Her heart’s a thumpin’… but who for? CALAMITY JANE will run from Tuesday 19 of August until Saturday 23 of August 2025.
CHICAGO
Probably the musical with the most hummable tunes from “Razzle Dazzle”, “Cell Block Tango”, to “All That Jazz”. The movie won six Academy Awards in 2003, including Best Picture but its the stage show that started it all. Opening in March 2025 CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
Movie loves will also be delighted to hear that the cult classic LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS will open on July 25th promising to thrill audiences with its unique mix of horror and humour told with an electrifying 1960s pop/rock score.
DR STRANGELOVE
Legendary actor Steve Coogan is coming to the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin with a stage version of DR. STRANGELOVE, Stanley Kubrick’s iconic film. Seven-time BAFTA Award winner Steve Coogan will lead the first ever adaptation of the film-maker’s work. Coogan will play multiple roles in Kubrick’s timeless production set to begin performances at the theatre from Wednesday 05 February to Saturday 22 February 2025 for a limited run.
This jet-black comedy masterpiece, about a rogue U.S. General who triggers a nuclear crisis, is brought to the stage by acclaimed, BAFTA and Emmy Award winner Armando Iannucci and Olivier Award winner Sean Foley (who previously made the hilarious Mindhorn) in an explosively funny satire of mutually assured destruction.
THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW
Few movies have stood the test of time like the 1975 musical comedy horror film which still see’s packed out screenings in cinemas to this day…. but before the movie there was the stage show, which has now been seen by over 35 million theatregoers. The Rocky Horror Show is the story of two squeaky clean college kids – Brad and his fiancée Janet. When by a twist of fate, their car breaks down outside a creepy mansion whilst on their way to visit their former college professor, they meet the charismatic Dr Frank’n’Furter. It is an adventure they’ll never forget, filled with fun, frolics, frocks, and frivolity.
THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN
Meanwhile THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, based on the popular novel that sold over 20 million copies opens at the theatre in August. Giovanna Fletcher will play Rachel Watson in this new stage drama, the role played by Emily Blunt in the big screen version that hit cinemas in 2016. The gripping story will keep you guessing until the final moment.
WAR HORSE
Steven Spielberg himself wept at the National Theatre production of War Horse at the New London Theatre back on February 1st, 2010, deciding there and then that he was going to bring this 1982 Michael Mopurgo children’s novel set during WW1 to the big screen. The acclaimed production returns to the stage next January in an unforgettable theatrical experience that takes audiences on an extraordinary journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. At its heart are astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.
THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE
There have been multiple film versions of CS Lewis’ much loved children’s classic. There’s currently a new big screen adaptation being made by Barbie director Greta Gerwig, but before that in May 2025 the story comes to life on stage in this spectacular production which is guaranteed to delight all ages.
