GONE GIRL is released in Irish cinemas this week, and stars Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck in the big screen adaptation of Gillian Filynn’s novel. At Movies.ie, we decided to gather together the facts about David Fincher’s latest film…
1. Best Seller
GONE GIRL was one of the best setting books of 2012, it was #1 in the New York Times bestseller list for 8 weeks and sold over two million copies in just one year.
2. New Ending
GONE GIRL author Gillian Flynn caused panic amongst fans of the book when she revealed she had written a drastically different ending for the screenplay to keep them interested in the film version, and to prevent viewers from getting spoiled. “The mood, tone, and spirit of the book are very much intact,” she assured.
3. How Long Have You Got?
The unabridged version of the audiobook comes on fifteen compact discs and takes 19.25 hours to hear in its entirety. Thankfully the movie version clocks in a lot shorter at 145 minutes.
4. Autobiographical
Author Gillian Flynn admitted to putting some of herself into the character of Nick Dunne played by Ben Affleck. Like Dunne, she was a popular culture writer who was laid off after many years at the same job. Speaking to the Huffington Post she said “I certainly wove that experience, that sense of having something that you were going to do for the rest of your life and seeing that possibility taken away… I definitely wove that sense of unrest and nervousness into Nick’s character.”
5. Battle Of The Directors
To test David Fincher’s directing capabilities Ben Affleck changed the lens setting on a camera by a tiny amount and placed a bet that Fincher would never notice. However the change was noticed by the eagle-eyed director straight away, saying ‘Why does the camera look a little dim?'”
6. David Who?
During an interview with Vulture actor Tyler Perry who plays Tanner Bolt in GONE GIRL said he never would have signed on to the movie if he’d known how popular the book was or if he had been familiar with the career of director David Fincher. “When things are that magical for people and they become very special for people, there’s a lot of pressure for it to be what they want it to be,” he revealed.
7. Reece Witherspoon
American actress Reese Witherspoon owns the screen rights to Gone Girl through her production company Pacific Standard. The star of Legally Blonde paid US$1.5 million for the rights and is serving as a producer on the film. She said she was drawn to the story because of its strong female character and its use of multiple perspectives and non-linear structure.

9. Blurred Lines
Emily Ratajkowski, the 21 year old model who appeared in the controversial ‘Blurred Lines’ video from Robin Thicke will make her movie acting debut in GONE GIRL. Emily’s casting as Andie Hardy was a big surprise in Hollywood, the role was hotly contested among some of the best actresses in Hollywood.
