Star Trek Into Darkness

I loved this movie, well paced, just enough character development to keep it interesting, action balanced with some humour. My 2 sticking points are Alice Eve as the doctor, her acting was clunky, never quite matching the pace of the rest of the actors. My other downer is Karl Urban as Bones McCoy, he came across as a caricature / impression of the original, each line being one of the 'dammit Jim I can't xxxx' sort, give the man some lines that are original!

Oz: The Great and Powerful

I was expecting to love this movie, and am rather perturbed that it was only ok. For me the biggest issues are James Franco and Mila Kunis, Franco is supposed ot be a charmer but the way he plays it he's sleazy, so I could never empathise with his Oz character. Kunis is weak in the role of Theodora, the character has a life change that really doesn't play well - i never felt that the situation require her going all witch! Some of the CGI is amazing, but a couple of images are weak (there is one of Mila skipping along the road, as the image pulls back it gets very bitty).

A tale of 6 stories with gossamer threads linking them across time. With each of the main actors playing different character in different stories, we move from story to story, century to century. For me there were a couple of stand out segments, the futuristic story of an android becoming aware was very well told, as was the great escape from a retirement home. My biggest concern is that Halle Berry didn't have the acting range, so the story dips each time one of her characters appears. Of the ensemble, Ben Whishaw for me stole the show as a young composer. I'll watch this movie again, to see if I can catch all the threads next time round.

Sammy's Great Escape

It always surprises me when so much money is put into production of movies, and so little into the script. Too sweet and saccharine for an adult to enjoy, borderline enjoyable for anyone aged under 8.

Wreck-It Ralph

Funny movie, basically Toy Story for arcade game characters. Title character is tired of being the bad guy and wants to be the good guy just once. Lots of gaming references throughout, however plethora of sweet brands got tired really quickly.

I enjoyed this movie, a nice story, well told. It's not a game changer in terms of movies, but it was an enjoyable movie with a selection of great cinema talent. I suspect this will become a regular on TV.

I really enjoyed this movie, its a simple story told well, you come out of the cinema humming the songs, and smiling for the outcome. Perfect November movie, to brighten dark evenings.

A rollercoaster from start to finish, with a number of new character being introduced. A more personal story than past stories for both Bond and M. Bardem is the best bad guy yet, creepy, slightly mad and very charismatic, a perfect foil to Craigs Bond.

Looper

I enjoyed Looper, an interesting idea and well executed - I suspect a second viewing will be required to fully appreciate if it is a classic or not - did the twist and turns hide a good or bad movie!

The Bourne Legacy

This entire movie feels like a build up to a real Bourne movie, lots of twists and turns, but I never quite engaged with Aaron Cross the way I did with JB. A few good set pieces, but a little more character development would have been nice. However, Edward Nortons character is menacing in that he is so reasonable and almost civil servent like in ordering deaths.

I really enjoyed this, a nice kids movie with great animation. I thought it missed some of the layers and nuances I'd normally associate with Pixar, but its still a good movie.

Dr. Seuss' The Lorax 2

Hmmm, I'll start by saying my 6 and 8 year old nieces loved this movie, so my 2.5/5 rating was upgraded to 3/5, as they are the target audience! Very saccharine sweet movie, instantly forgettable songs, and none of the charm I'd associate with Dr Seuss' work. On the plus side, it looks good, and the 3D was very good. I expect more from kids movies since great works like Shrek / Despicable Me / Toy Story upped the bar on what a kids movie should be!
