Scary Movie 5

Okay, well the humour is stupid and most of the jokes fall flat, but it keeps trying throughout and you can't help but smile and laugh at some of the jokes and the sheer enthusiasm of the film. There are some nice homages to recent films and the outtakes at the end are great.

Oblivion

While the trailer for Oblivion looked great, unfortunately it is a bit of a mess. There are a lot of sci-fi ideas in here (most not what you would call original), but none of them really work. And my God does the film drag slowly along its two hour running time. But it does have some saving graces. The cast are all great, in particular Tom Cruise who love him or hate him gives his all in every performance. There are also some nice special effects. So overall a 2 star rating is a perhaps little bit kind, but fair rating.

Brilliant acting, fantastic story line and some really great tense moments, makes this a fantastic film. Just keeps you enthralled for the entire running time, and while not what you would call a thriller keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. The twists and turns keep coming and there is a great unpredictability about the whole thing.

Another recent comedy that is very hit and miss, but they are enough great one liners to please. Is way too long though and does drag very badly towards the end.

While the laughs are pretty much hit and miss throughout this film, there are enough hits to make it a good enough watch. Jim Carrey is great in a supporting role, but as usual it is Alan Arkin who steals every scene he is in.

Really top notch thriller this, that keeps a wonderfully unsettling and dreamlike tone throughout. The cast are all excellent and it twists and turns towards a wonderful finale.

Cameron Crowe is like an american Richard Curtis, as he makes film not really based in the real world. And this film keeps this tradition up. It is light, funny in places, but has little to no substance or bite. But it is a nice film that has you smiling throughout, like most other Crowe films.

Okay, this film is a load of nonsence, but it is very enjoyable nonsence. Josh Lucas is brilliantly over the top as the villian, the background musice is mental and Nicolas Cage has almost become a parody of himself. But you can't help but laugh and enjoy the silliness of the plot and action.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

I have to say I loved GI Joe Rise of Cobra in 2009. It was critically destroyed but was great fun. But this sequel does not have the same kick. Don't get me wrong, there are some great set pieces (especially the mountain top), and Jonathan Pryce is great as the bad guy. But it loses any of its humour early on, some characters are just there and have no characterisation at all. Plus Bruce Willis shows up for no real reason (all his lines I think are in the trailer). So more realistic maybe than the first, perhaps even a better made film in some ways, but a hell of a lot less fun.

While the excellent cast do their best, this adventure never really goes beyond ok, as it never really clicks together until near the end with a pretty spectacular finale. Just a shame about the two thirds of the film that comes before.

Oh dear this is a bit of a mess. Not even the great John Cusack can save this boring "thriller" that never gets out of first gear. I am presuming a lot was cut as it all seems to make little to no sense. A decent enough ending also cannot save it.

Disappointing action flick with Jason Statham. Is way too long and the anti-hero thing does not work well here as little of the motivations make sense. Also Jennifer Lopez is kind of just thrown into the film half way through and never really feels right. But it gets a second star for some nice fight scenes, touchs of humour and Jason Statham as always is watchable in stuff like this. But could have been so much better.
