So, what's it all about?

From Disney-Pixar comes "Up," a comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But, he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic eight-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell.

Movies.ie Review

WHAT IT'S ABOUT?

Pixar makes it ten gems in a row with this enchanting animated story of 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen, a recent widower who decides to fulfill his (plus his late wife's) lifelong dream of tying thousands of balloons to their house and floating off to a mountaintop in South America. But he soon discovers a stowaway in the form of Russell, a precocious eight-year-old "Wilderness Explorer" who he reluctantly allows to accompany him on his journey. Together the unlikely pair embark on the adventure of a lifetime, encountering Kevin, a rare, 13-foot tall-flightless bird; Dug, an overly-friendly talking pooch; and Charles Muntz, a once-famous adventurer who now lives alone in a massive airship, surrounded by a pack of attack dogs.

WHO'S IN IT?

Sticking to their general custom of casting actors, not big stars, in key voice roles, Pixar assembled a superb cast for Up, led by veteran TV star Ed Asner (The Mary Tyler Moore Show) as the aged Carl, who takes flight in his house and finds there is a lot to learn about life even as you near death. Asner's grumpy delivery provides the perfect counterpoint to nine-year-old Jordan Nagai's Russell, a bright and optimistic kid who proves an invaluable assistant to Carl throughout their journey. Christopher Plummer (The Sound of Music) is authoritative and intriguing as the obsessed Muntz and John Ratzenberger (Cheers) extends his streak of Pixar films to 10 as a construction engineer who tries to convince Carl to sell his house. Bob Peterson does delightful double duty as two of the key dog voices, lovable Dug and the menacing Alpha, head of the pack.

WHAT'S GOOD?

Like Pixar's previous Oscar-winning masterpiece Wall-E, Up is a 'toon that is not content to explore the same places we've seen in previous animated blockbusters. Centering an action comedy around a 78-year-old man isn't a strategy you'll find in the youth-obsessed Hollywood recipe book, but it pays great dividends here with a moral that life's greatest adventure is the one you share with someone you love. The non-humans particularly Kevin and Dug are hilarious and unique, and a silent sequence detailing the courtship and marriage of the Fredricksens is a sweet touch that could have come straight out of a Charlie Chaplin movie.

WHAT'S BAD?

With a string of critically-acclaimed hits that includes Toy Story, Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E and now Up, Pixar is ruining it for everyone else. There is simply no way they can be topped when it comes to pushing the boundaries of animated movies. Bad for other studios. Good for us.

OSCAR WATCH?

Could Up, which just became the first animated film to open the Cannes Film Festival, also become the first to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar since Beauty and the Beast in 1991 (before the Animation category was even established)? At this point in the year, it's actually a good bet. Whatever the case, expect Up to earn several nominations come Oscar time.

FAVORITE SCENE?

A swashbuckling swordfight across the skies between two near-octogenarians? It's the best action scene in a summer full of 'em.

NETFLIX OR MULTIPLEX?

Oh, pleeeeeease! Get to a theater fast. Up is also available in 3-D at select locations. Either way, it's a must-see.

The short movie "Partly Cloudy" was worth the entrance fee alone and "Up" itself is just beautiful. It makes you want to laugh, to cry, to shout out loud, to cuddle the bird, smack your hand against your forehead but mostly it makes you want to keep sitting after the credits and watch it again. The movie is wonderfully made for both children and adults and even though one KNOWS, it still teaches so much of life and how to maybe handle things that get thrown at you by life. It is a beautiful movie that will most certainly be added to my DVD collection. It is worth every penny.

This is a very enjoyable film indeed. I think what is the most surprising is how involved you become with the characters emotionally. I would highly recommend the film no matter what age you are.

I was a little disappointed with this installment from Pixar. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie but I just feel it wasn't as good as previous movies, Wall e for example.

wonderful film, that is computer animated rather than a computer animated film (if that makes sense). As with all Pixar films, it has a warmth and heart that others just can't seem to do. Highly recommended

As the premise suggests its alot of fun... really vivid. Didn't really feel the 3d enhanced it... would love to see them do more with this technology! The fact that this fi;m deals with "people" rather than monsters, cars, or robots makes it more moving, and a little less fantastical (despite the floating house... and talking dogs :P). Still lots of fun. Like all Pixar movie's it offers a guaranteed laugh at the cinemas!!! Woo, Pixar you've done it again!:D

This is Pixar's most mature movie that has some of the most real characters I can remember. The genius is that they put them in a fantastical environment. Any kids film that has a 70+ lead character and the best talking dog in film is a must see.

I got to go to the Premiere of UP recently (THANKS MOVIES.IE) and I have to say, this is a great movie! Is it the best Pixar movie I've seen? No. That still goes to Wall-E, but it's definitely in my top 3. The Animation and Graphics are amazing. The progress made in this area over the 10 pixar movies is amazing! The movie is also in 3D. Every 3D movie I've gone to see has gotten progressively better and this one currently tops the list of the best 3D movie I've seen. In terms of Story, I won't get into too much, but the story is great. A really nice family friendly story (what else would you expect from Pixar in fairness!). All that i can realy say, is go see it, I don't think you'll be disappointed! I know I wasn't.

Another excellent release from the masters of annimation, Pixar. There are no real surprises here we know exactly how the story will play out, but what a great journey. The characters had a real warmth and depth to them, and as always the strongest emotions are the ones not said. The animation was top notch, and the story excellent, a real heart warming movie for all ages. Go see this movie, even Twist liked it !!

Sweet. It's a nice story, beautifully crafted and delivered with stunning visual effects by Pixar. I don't think it is as great as Finding Nemo but it's a touching film. Highly original and entertaining. Loved all the South America thing. A must-see!

Up is the new Disney-Pixar collaboration. The start of the film shows a young Carl Fredrickson who meets an adventurous girl called Ellie. They fall in love and throughout their long marriage they dream of one day going to a Lost Land in South America together. But 70 years after their first meeting Ellie has died and Carl remembers the promise they made. Then when he hits a construction worker who broke his mailbox he is forced to go to a retirement home. Knowing this will end his lifelong dream he flies away toward South America with his house and an unwanted visitor in the form of 8 year-old Russell. They go on an adventure together in which they encounter talking dogs, an evil villain and a rare bird. Soon Carl finds himself warming up to some of these new characters and realises that there is life after his wife. Up is without doubt the best animated film I have ever seen. I always figured it would be good but it was one of the most breathtakingly brilliant films I have ever seen. It is hugely imaginative, utterly hilarious and extremely charming. The film is genuinely heartbreaking and is evocative throughout without using forms of manipulation. It's a visually magnificent film which takes Disney/Pixar's silent storytelling to a whole new level. No other filmmakers in the world can capture the same tenderness, emotion and pure entertainment even with dialogue. It's oddly gripping and with Wall-E it seems that the animated genre of film has hit a whole new extraordinary level. Within the first ten minutes it had triumphed over all that had come before as it was immediately powerful and moving which was all the more impressive considering that the character's hadn't even been developed fully. The voice cast of the film were all amazing, although it would be hard not to be with such fantastic and lovable characters. Ed Asner is Carl Fredrickson and he is great as the cranky, lonely and heartbroken old man. It is Jordan Nagai and Bob Peterson who stole the show however as youngster Russell and dimwitted dog Dug. Both characters were unbelievably hilarious and were some of the best film characters I have ever seen. Dug was particularly exceptional. Everything that came out of his mouth, or collar in this case, was pure comedic gold and he had me laughing uncontrollably throughout. Not to mention he was extremely likable and I wanted to take him home. The rest of the cast, led by baddie Christopher Plummer were pretty solid but unfortunately failed to make a huge impact past the excellent main performers. The film is directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson, the men behind some of the best animated films ever made. They are exceptional directors, and in this case writers. Their originality, wit and pure genius has given us some fantastic films and I truly hope that they continue making films as brillaint as this in the near future. So all in all this is one truly amazing film. It has more heart, emotion, charm and character than any film of this year, if not ever. If you liked Wall-E in any way then you will be suprised by how much they managed to raise their game since. This film is perfect for people of all ages. Kids will love the dozy and simple characters and adults will love the humour, the tenderness and stunning imagery. One of the only that I would recommend so much as to call it completely unmissable. So when Up eventually hits Irish cinemas I would hugely recommend that you make the journey.

Had the chance to see this while on holiday in the US, an absolutely superb film, entirely deserving of the Best Film nod it will undoubtedly receive at the Oscars in 2010. It is pure Pixar but is as perfect as a classic Disney, this film has memorable characters, comedy and a perfectly executed story. A must-see, I'll be back for more in October!
