Movies.ie Critic Review

Eh, there’s a battle in space, about 50 years ago, those nasty Deceptors wiping out everyone except the fleeing Sentinel Prime, who is blown out of the sky, presumed dead. Only, hey, he ain’t, as Nasa discovers when they land on the moon. And it’s soon realized that Sentinel is the key to an all-out attack on Planet Earth. Sam Witwicky (LaBeouf) is meanwhile struggling with adulthood, finding a job, and coping with his superhot new girlfriend (Huntington-Whiteley, who appears to be the daughter of Jessica Rabbit) and her touchy-feely boss (Dempsey).

THE VERDICT: My 7-year old nephew, Oisin, loved it. But then, he’s 7. And claims to completely understands manga plots. For everyone else, Dark Of The Moon will prove pretty much the same experience as the first sequel, 2009’s Revenge Of The Fallen - a two-and-a-half-hour trailer for a decent one-and-a-half-hour movie. The cock-waving Bay can’t do comedy, but he can do balletic action sequences, which is why the Transformers films are full of them. Following the standard Bruckheimer formula – high concept, hot young couple, sitcom parents, a few good (American) men fighting to save the world, some Oscar-winning actor cameos (John Malkovich and Frances McDormand amongst them), and lots and lots of hi-fi-busting, hi-tech spectacle – Dark Of The Moon nonetheless fails to ever truly get its feet firmly on the ground. Having been seemingly edited by an ADD sufferer. Or a commercials whizzkid. Such as Bay. Better than the disastrous Revenge Of The Fallen, this is still far-too-long and a tad too convoluted.

Despite its manifest improvements, there is something so sour and unpleasant about the new film that it left me almost nostalgic for the innocent idiocies of its predecessor.

Better than 2, not as good as 1. About an hour longer than it needed to be. Super slick but way too much filler.

Super smashy spinning fight-bots! With added non-racism! Surprisingly good!

I am not sure about this. I don't feel there was enough action in it personally. I quite liked it personally, the action was good, and for once Shia LeBeefs performance didn't make me want to hurl myself off a bridge. On a positive note, there was lots of action, lots of transformers etc. On the flip side of that unfortunately they didn't cover off the characters in any detail what so ever probably due to the sheer volume of characters in it. This new woman playing Sam's love interest was just a terrible, terrible change. As much as I didn't specifically enjoy Megan Fox's performance, this one's about a million times worse. Didn't believe her, didn't believe the character, she didn't fit into it at all...just all completely disconnected. Lastly, the splurge of killing off main characters in the end of the film was a huge disappointment to me, killing off more or less my 3 favs (Soundwave, StarScream and Ironhide). All in all very watchable, but as a fan of the cartoons and the story behind transformers, I just felt it lacked and made me just want the series to end.

I was lucky enough to win tickets to the premier of this film and thought it was so much better than the second film! Although my friend saw both the premier and the film in a normal cinema they said that various bits had been cut such as the little funny robots - so I don't know how well it would be received by the general public as those little dudes made the film! Still any robot / sci-fi / shia la beuf / josh duhamel fans should definately make a trip to the cinema to see this one!

Enjoyable nonsense from Michael Bay. This movie is one of those summer blockbusters that does exactly what it says on the tin. Anyone going to see this movie looking for anything but lots of explosions combined withplot holes and talentless bimbos really do not deserve any sympathy if they complain the movie did not live up to their expectations. Not a bad way to end the trilogy, and loved the many references to star trek and spock...nice touch.

Going into this film, I wasn't expecting too much. Things going boom, bam, robots transforming and stick insects pouting. I wasn't wrong, but I enjoyed it alot more than I thought I would. A fair few funny little moments - Lincoln statue! Not much brain power needed, thankfully! Fantastic 3D!!! Brilliant effects! Terrible acting, plot and some head shakey, crinngey bits, but still somewhat lovable!

I was unprepared for just how poor this film was. There were a few interesting visuals and ideas but the execution was labouriously long, too repetative and too predictable. The amusing side characters were even less amusing than ever. The drop in replacement makes Megan Fox look good, although in fairness they were never given a lot to work with. I didn't bother seeing it in 3D maybe that would have helped. Unless you enjoyed the second of the series don't expect to enjoy this one, it is only marginally better, which is to say still pretty poor.

Better than number 2, lacking just a little behind number 1. At times it seemed a bit dragged out with needless moments, although the detective / twist of the film was q nice change. Action overall is probably the best so far, as it looked awesome and was massive! I like it!

Michael Bay's 3rd and supposedly final attempt at making a Transformers movie that isn't an affront to the film world. For me this series has always been a guilty pleasure but I can see why fans of the cartoons and toys are feeling much maligned. Bay does more of the giant robots beating the heck out of each other than ever but still keeps the core action on humans as well as the boring and unnecessary Sam story. The 3D is really, really impressive and Bay has changed his style so you can actually follow his beautifully shot action. The film is at least 30 mins too long but the film flows better than the previous entry and if you like the films to have loud noise and pretty, pretty explosions then you'll have a ball seeing this. I did but sometimes I'm shallow like that.
