Movies.ie Critic Review
An ensemble romantic comedy that is made up almost entirely of meet-cute moments, in amongst the many subplots, Kutcher's nice-guy florist proposes to Alba's girlfriend-in-a-state-of-shock; MacLaine and Hector Elizondo are the happy old couple about to celebrate 50 years together when their love hits its first major bump; Emma Roberts is all set to lose her virginity with her loving boyfriend, and doesn't mind telling everyone about it; Bradley Cooper is crying in his pretzel bag over a broken heart alongside fellow flyer Julia Roberts' good soldier, using her leave to spend just one night with the love of her life; most surprisingly, country Barbie Taylor Swift pretty much steals the show, being a natural at playing a ditzy teen head-over-heels with Taylor Lautner's dopey school hunk.
THE VERDICT: A movie that couldn't be more commercial if it came with free chocolates and a heart-shaped balloon for every ticket sold, Valentine's Day is, like so many tacky gifts on this annual mushfest, utterly disposable. Once Valentine's weekend has passed, who in their right mind would want to go and see this? This is Love, Actually with all the grit and spit taken out. It's that insipid.
