So, what's it all about?

Abby Richter is a romantically challenged morning show producer whose search for Mr. Perfect has left her hopelessly single. She's in for a rude awakening when her bosses team her with Mike Chadway, a hardcore TV personality who promises to spill the ugly truth on what makes men and women tick.

Movies.ie Review

WHAT IT'S ABOUT?

Constructed as an homage of sorts to the classic "opposites attract" screwball comedies of old, The Ugly Truth stars Katherine Heigl (Knocked Up, TV's Grey's Anatomy) as Abby Richter, an ambitious, Type A news producer for the local morning talk show A.M. Sacramento. Abby's uncompromising approach to news gathering is surpassed only by her uncompromising approach to dating; as a result, she's chronically single and her show's ratings are in the toilet. So when her boss insists that she take on Mike Chadway, the brash, obnoxious host of a cable-access relationship-oriented talk show as a new correspondent, Abby has little choice but to accept, despite her misgivings about Mike's unabashed chauvinism. Though ratings for A.M. Sacramento immediately spike with the addition of Mike, Abby remains unconvinced as to the efficacy of his politically incorrect (read: misogynist) dating advice. Chastened by Abby's continued skepticism, Mike makes her a wager: If she applies his tools and doesn't successfully turn around her moribund dating life, he'll quit the show. Abby agrees, initiating a sexually charged battle of wits between the two strident adversaries.

WHO'S IN IT?

Facing off against Heigl is Gerard Butler, the man who once roared "We are Sparta!" as the infinitely badass King Leonidas in the sword-and-sandals epic 300. Unfortunately, Butler followed up the 2006 blockbuster with the weepy chick flick P.S. I Love You, then the limp action fantasy Nim's Island. And while he did manage to redeem himself as a cocky British gangster in Guy Ritchie's comeback RocknRolla, Butler takes a sad U-turn with The Ugly Truth, falling to emasculating new lows in this insipid romantic comedy. Supporting castmembers include Cheryl Hines (Curb Your Enthusiasm), John Michael Higgins (Yes Man, Best in Show), Bree Turner (Just My Luck) and Eric Winter (Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay).

WHAT'S GOOD?

Butler and Heigl are both tremendously charming, camera-friendly actors (no one has perfected the art of "sexily flustered" better than Heigl) and they do exhibit a fun, lively chemistry at times during The Ugly Truth. Unfortunately, they're given precious little to work with and are forced to subsist on the few morsels of quality material the script provides.

WHAT'S BAD?

Director Robert Luketic (21, Monster-in-Law, Legally Blonde) has always been a strict adherent to the modern style-over-substance school of filmmaking, and The Ugly Truth is suitably glossy and slick. But damned if it isn't the most uninspired, unfunny, unsexy sitcom rip-off to grace theaters in recent memory. If Luketic devoted half as much time to punching up the script as he did to lovingly photographing boy toy Eric Winter, he might actually have a decent movie on his hands.

FAVORITE SCENE?

Oy, that's a tough one. The closing credits would be too obvious a choice, so let's instead go with whichever scene immediately preceded the closing credits.

PARTING SHOT

Heigl gets to show off her orgasm-faking skills during a scene in which she inadvertently turns on a pair of vibrating underpants (don't ask me to explain) at a dinner with corporate execs. Interestingly enough, it's her least sexy moment in the film.

average at best , try's to be daring with butlers fairly honest / crude dialog, but falls short in many areas but mostly in being original.plot and ending so predictable from the first minute.

A couple of chuckles aside, this "comedy" is a dire mess. Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl are much better than this rubbish.

One of the funniest romantic comedies I've seen in a long time. Sure the story is predictable but it has some very good and funny dialogues and the actors are up to the par.

Enjoyed seeing this. Lots of sharp dialouge and very well acted throughout. Thought they could have done more with the ending than they did but good for what it is.

Was brought to see this film against my will and it did not disappoint, it's a woeful film with cheap laughs and a idiotic plot.

Despite the best efforts of Butler and Heigl, The Ugly Truth suffers from a weak script that relies on romantic comedy formula, with little charm or comedic payoff.

Every scene is predictable. So boring and unfunny. I love rom-coms but this and The Proposal are really making me re-think my choice in genres. The acting isn't terrible, I just expected better.

Good Rom-Com. Seemed to be more aimed at men, emphasising how crazy women can actually be. Enjoyable.

very mixed reviews from many platforms on this movie, and whilst i try to remember to "always make up my own mind" on movies, i was geting sucked into the negative reviews, especially from friends who literally implored me not to go see this movie. and you know what...? i am pleasantly surprised to report they were wrong! i must say i actually found it somewhat refreshing - a "chick flick" love story with a twist...not sweet or soppy or even romantic - gerard butler plays a seemingly ignorant and arrogant "manwhore" (haha) and i must say he plays it fairly well - although...i kept expecting him to scream "SPAAAAAAAARTAAAAAAAA" at any given moment! was very funny throughout - well paced, well acted, great chemistry between them...a great love story that a guy can enjoy as much as a woman...without worrying about emotions and puppy dogs and all that! :)

Avoid at all costs!!! Don't waste your time. Not even a little bit funny, needlessly crude and terrible dialogue. All of this has been done before but way better. Go see The Proposal instead!

Great rom-com, at least for what it is. Soppy enogh to keep the girls happy, crude enough to keep the lads grinning. Butler is hilarious as the cocky and rude man behind the harsh television show, The Ugly Truth. Heigl is not very funny but more cringe-worthy as her uptight T.V procucer character. If she keeps up her recent work then she'll become known the chick flick girl. This may sound like an achievement but this also means she will never bag any serious roles which couls actually progress her career a bit. Well directed. Extremely predictable but funny enough so that you don't actually care. Well worth the watch if you need a night out with the ole ball and chain. Although if you want something good then avoid it, and evoid G:I JOE even more(dreadful). Enjoy, Adios.

Katherine Heigl Is Slowly Pushing her Way To gaining The Title Og Queen of Comedy.. this movie Is Great And Easily Enjoyable.. Butler Wasnt As Good As Expected But it Turned Out To be Quite A Funny And Entertaining movie.. It Wasnt So Much A Cliche Movie in my opinion but The Two Lead Do End Up Together.. 4 stars :D

Good comedy, with a twist now the boy aids the girl in getting a guy! Butler and Heigl are ok together and there are some very funny moments, but a cliche 3rd act kills the small ounce of originality thats present at the beginning.

Sorry that I saw it. Previews show it to be a gentle yet slightly sarcastic, romantic banter between a man and a woman, but the movie itself was overtly crude and got more and more rank as the banter continued through to the end of movie. I love Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl, but honestly, sometimes the truth does not have to be so "ugly".
