So, what's it all about?

"Inglourious Basterds" begins in German-occupied France, where Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa. Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema. Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own.

Movies.ie Review

WHAT'S IT ABOUT?

Set in occupied France during the waning days of World War II, Inglourious Basterds jumps back and forth between different storylines over the course of several chapters before bringing them together for one intense, utterly preposterous climax.

The "Basterds" of the film's title refers to an elite group of Jewish-American soldiers assembled by Lt. Aldo Raine, a no-nonsense descendent of Southern moonshiners whose assignment for his troops is simple: Each of them is tasked with gathering the scalps of 100 dead Nazi soldiers before the war is over. With each shocking act of retribution the Basterds perform, word spreads of their savagery, and by the time they arrive in occupied France their reputation is known to every enemy soldier.

Meanwhile, Shosanna Dreyfus, a French Jew who narrowly escaped the Gestapo death squad that murdered her immediate family, has relocated to Paris and established a new identity as the owner of a local cinema. As Nazi patrols blanket the city, she toils quietly under an assumed name, awaiting the day when her own chance at retribution will come.

The destinies of Shosanna and the Basterds converge when Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels decides to hold the premiere of his latest propaganda film, Nation's Pride, at Shosanna's theater. With the aid of Bridget von Hammersmark, a German film star secretly working as a double agent, the Allies learn that no less than the entire Nazi High Command, including Hitler, will be in attendance. Confronted with the opportunity to deliver their unique brand of justice to the Fuhrer himself and end the war in one fell swoop, the Basterds concoct a bold scheme to infiltrate the premiere, rig the theater with dynamite and incinerate its inhabitants with one massive explosion.

WHO'S IN IT?

Always known for his unconventional approach to casting, Inglourious Basterds director Quentin Tarantino assembled a characteristically eclectic group of actors for his latest effort, mixing veterans with newcomers, Americans with Europeans and superstars with virtual unknowns. Sporting a ridiculous mustache and an even more ridiculous Southern accent, Brad Pitt leads the pack in the role of Aldo Raine, while horror director Eli Roth (Hostel I and II) makes his acting debut as Raine's sadistic right-hand man, Sgt. Donny Donowitz. Other notable Basterds include B.J. Novak (The Office), Samm Levine (Freaks and Geeks), Paul Rust (I Love You, Beth Cooper) and Omar Doom (Grindhouse).

It's the cast's European players who really distinguish Inglourious Basterds. German-born National Treasure star Diane Kruger makes the perfect 1940s matinee idol as the turncoat von Hammersmark, while Irish-bred Michael Fassbender (Jonah Hex) oozes with old-school English haughtiness as her charming British co-conspirator, Lt. Archie Hicox. Making an impressive English-language debut in Basterds as the quietly seething Shosanna is the luminous French star Melanie Laurent.

Rising above all of them with a truly Oscar-worthy performance is Austrian actor Christoph Waltz. Waltz is a revelation (to American audiences, at least) as Col. Hans Landa, the highly eccentric and brutally efficient leader of Nazi security efforts in France. Alternately hilarious and terrifying, Waltz's Landa is easily the most compelling big-screen villain since Heath Ledger's Joker in The Dark Knight. Lest we forget, Ledger won a posthumous Oscar for his performance. (Waltz, for his part, already snagged the best-actor prize at Cannes earlier this year.)

WHAT'S GOOD?

Nobody executes dramatic shifts in tone more effectively and powerfully than Tarantino, and Inglourious Basterds transitions breathlessly between moments of high tension and high comedy, brutal carnage and lighthearted whimsy all of which are peppered with the director's distinctive dialogue and trademark wit. The film is easily his best work since 1994's Pulp Fiction.

WHAT'S BAD?

At over two-and-a-half hours, there are moments when the pacing of Inglourious Basterds seriously drags. Tarantino is above all else an actor's director, and there are times that he becomes so enamored with a performance that he'll allow a scene to extend well beyond the point that its resolution has become a foregone conclusion. How such an obviously ADD-addled guy like Tarantino can exhibit such disdain for brevity is beyond my comprehension.

WHERE ARE THE BASTERDS?

Contrary to the film's ad campaign, the Basterds are actually minor players in the storyline. Only Pitt and Roth are given a substantial amount of dialogue; Novak and the others have only a line or two if they speak at all.

PARTING SHOT

I won't give anything away, but suffice it to say that Inglourious Basterds' storyline features a decidedly revisionist take on the events of World War II. Obviously, historical accuracy wasn't a priority for Tarantino and it probably shouldn't be for the viewer, either.

as far as a Tarantino movie goes, it felt quite tame to me. Having said that i'm not the greatest fan of sadistic violence, which wasn't really in this one, a couple of scenes where there was a bit of cringing but other than that, it was fairly good. I liked the story line, and the fictional elements, altogether it was a nice package.

Funny, shocking, gory, all you can expect from this movie. The movie works its magic from the get go. Although it is quite a long movie you're guaranteed to be captivated from start to finish while going through all the range of emotions. Not for the faint of heart as there are quite graphic scenes.

Not tarantino's best outing by any means but still a very watchable piece of film. I loved brad pitt's character and laughed my arse off at him trying to speak italian!. I wish tarantino would hire a screen writer to translate his wonderful ideas into even better movies. As i found plenty of this movie to be extremely self indulgent.

Not as good as the sum of its parts. QT has finally disappeared up his own rectum. Christoph Waltz was amazing in this movie but the 'Jewish Revenge Porn' type scenes got a little grating to be honest. Who needs a coherent plot when pithy dialogue and blood will do? As mentioned in the fist sentence, brilliant in parts, potential to be amazing but just good in my humble opinion. And dont get me started on Pitts acting.

Yes overlong and a little self indulgent but also mature, witty and elegantly constructed - Basterds proves once and for all that Tarantino is not JUST hot air and bluster. The action is kept to a minimum but is interspersed perfectly in the brilliantly written dialogue scenes. The central villain gives an Oscar worthy performance and Ireland's own Michael Fassbender has a great cameo. Check it out for a history warping, violent and utterly inglourious time.

One of QT's finest!!! Just superb!!! Christophe Waltz is just wow in it. Such a charming but brutal character. He looked and played the part brilliantly. Brad Pitt and the Basterds are just fantastic. Wish they were in it just a bit more though. Especially Eli Roth who definitly needed more screen time, such an fantastic character and surprisingly excellently played by Eli. Dialogue is amazing like it is in every QT movie. The tension in some scenes is unreal. You're glued to the screen as soon as soon as the music starts. Soundtrack is nailed perfectly yet again. Its such a fun movie, wonderful violence and as soon as it ended I wanted to watch it all over again!!! I could keep going on about it and about all the characters but I would definitely run out of space and time!!! Hehe!!! He has done it again. :D

A true return to form for Tarantino. I have to say I was apprehensive, over 2 and half hours of Tarantino didn't bode well with me after the drivel of Kill Bill 2 and the good but overly long Deathproof. But I have to say I can't find too many faults with this movie without nit picking. It was really nicely paced, so much that it didn't feel anywhere near the running time. The performances were excellent. The direction impeccable, especially as it was multilingual. There was one scene that did bug me but can't really say much without giving some of the story, but I think everyone who's seen it will know what I mean about the projection room scene. But to knock a star off for what was a very brief scene would be really petty. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and would encourage anyway who has liked anything from Tarantino to check this out as I think it's up there with his best work.

Was expecting the bat scene to be a little more gorey,.. Tarantino's Hostel is nice an bloody,.. just for the sake of it,.. but this isn't. Didn't recognise Mike Myers,.. dialogue is good,.. but don't think it rates anywhere like Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill movies,.. still,.. one of the best films I've seen in a while

Excellent and avergage all at the same time. Tarantino is a genius but this is much too much style over substance. Pacing of movie is way off and the music is not even close to Tarantino's usual gift for choosing the score. Damn I wanted this to be a classic .. it wasn't. Some parts are though :)

When Quentin Tarantino makes a film he doesn’t subscribe to the usual formula pertaining to that particular genre, rather he turns the genre on it’s head and gives it his own angle. For example, Reservoir Dogs was a heist film that had no heist in it! This time Tarantino has made a World War II film, but not just any World War II film…. it’s a Tarantino World War II film. Inglourious Basterds gives us Tarantino’s alternative ending to World War II. Yes an alternative ending like on DVDs! The Inglourious Basterds are an American Jewish outfit that has been sent in to Nazi Occupied France to carry out an Apache style guerilla war on the Nazis. When an ideal opportunity emerges to take out all of Germany’s top brass the Basterds are drafted for the task. But the Basterds are not the only ones with a plan to do so. This isn’t exactly what I would have expected from a Tarantino World War II film, for one thing I would have expected it to be alot more violent and fast paced. Instead the violence is minimal and the film felt a little drawn out and slow at times. But these are not necessarily negative comments. The film is actually quite suspensful. The opening scene is a very tense conversation between a French dairy farmer suspected of hiding a Jewish family and Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), “The Jew Hunter”. I think the dialogue in this film is much deeper and more intense than we’re used to from Tarantino. Overall I found the film enjoyable, funny, but not always “laugh out loud funny”, tense and artistic. I found the dialogue engaging and a departure from Tarantino’s usual. I would definitely recommend it.

absolutely, unequivically, unashamedly, FANTASTIC! loved this from start to finish, right from the get go it had my wife and i on the edge of our seats - and kept us there till the end. haven't seen a movie in ages where i have felt "nervous" (and i mean that in a good way...!), loads of suspense, loads of action, loads of laughs, i thought this was just perfect. obviously made a little bit of a mockery of the history of WW2 - it is somewhat of a "comic book" version of what actually happened...but even still as a 'different take'/alternate version of events it is actually a great story and well acted. Colnel Hans Landa was superb in my opinion, and loved Brad Pitt's accent througout...! top stuff, congrats to QT who is truly back and on firing form.

The star of the show is Christopher Waltz as the evil SS Col.Hans Landa and deserves an Oscar for his outstanding performance. Until I read this thread I did not realise that the film was so long..........it didnt seem very long, and so what if it was, nothing seemed drawn out to me no scene appeared to be over done. It looked great, sounded great and I have not stopped thinking about it since I seen it, great characters, great dialogue and a story that has held my attention till now.....three days after seeing the film. Tarantino's reputation allows him to take time to perfect his art and, it shows! It deserves several Oscars, but it wont even get one! So What!! Masterpiece

It's a revenge movie that carries the hate of 6 million Jews. That said, for all Tarantino's trademarks, it really was the script that glued me to the screen. Yes, it's in the same "let me sit down and tell YOU something" Tarantino format, but he manages to maintain a level of tension through that makes this a genuinely surprising black comedy thriller.

I have to say I was disappointed this barely scrapes three stars. Anyone who considers this a "masterpiece" or up there with "Reservoir Dogs" or "Pulp Fiction" must have a serious drugs problem frankly. Pro's: The Basterds are great, The "Jew hunter" is fantastic, Pitt, dialogue as you'd expect from Quentin. Cons: Too long, pacing is painfully slow at times, Quentin gets a bit self indulgent even by his standards at points. OVERALL: Not bad ... but not great.

This is 4 1/2 stars. This is Tarantino regaining his lost mojo. It has that mad unpredicability and playful sense of mayhem that made us take notice of him originally. It's also the first film of his that doesn't feel like a pastiche of all his influences. The performances of the cast are all top notch and the film masterfully shot. Only reason for the half star missing is that the film is just that bit too long. Otherwise a classic movie.

In 1991 Quentin Tarantino burst onto the scene with the gritty heist thriller which didn’t even have a heist in it. Then 2 years later he released Pulp Fiction, a stlish and clever film with more twists than a curly wurly. Unfortunately since then he has not had anything nearly as good. Jackie Brown was all talk and no action, Kill Bill had potential but was ultimately pointless and Death Proof was basically just plain terrible. And now 15 years later, with the film has been talking about for almost a decade QT has in my opinion made his masterpiece. Set in Nazi-Occupied France during World War II it’s the story of a group of Jewish American soldiers who were dropped into France as civilians with one goal, to elminate as many Nazi’s as possible. Eventually they find themselves in competition with other characters to pull off a historical assassination. Like so many of his other films QT takes a swing at the conventional. Beginning with a tense 20 minute conversation between a French farmer hiding Jews and the charming but dangerous ‘Jew Hunter’ we immediately see that this isn’t the violent, gorey and old film than most people expected. The Basterds themselves hardly appear together on screen. Brad Pitt, who could well be considered the main character only shows up in three of the films five chapters. This isn’t like Schindlers List or Saving Private Ryan. This film is QT’s World War II fantasy. The first clue of this lies right from the films opening words “Once Upon A Time In Nazi-Occupied France”. It’s a fairytale of what QT would have liked to happen and it is quite a story. Again we see how QT loves his characters’ voices as there is a lot of talking in the film but unlike the likes of Death Proof and Kill Bill:Volume 2 the conversations are more focused and sharp. He also uses the dialogue masterfully, like in the fourth chapter when a German movie star, an English Soldier and a German Soldier who all work for the basterds speak to a suspicious German Major. During this scene QT switches the control between the characters. These kind of features make this film more tense and suspenseful than all QT’s past films. The film is also unexpectedly funny, as gets funnier as the story progresses and there is more dramatic momentum to the film. Quentin Tarantino’s direction is stunning. In the action scenes he went for the spectacular while in the dramatic scenes he captured the tension and emotions perfectly. It is perhaps Tarantino’s most personal and tender film to date. He shot some really haunting images in the film, such as the one of the laughing face projected onto the smoke in a burning building. I was glad to see he didn’t give himself a role in the film as he is a lot better behind the camera than he is in front of it. The film’s cast are phenomenal. Brad Pitt gives one of his most memorable displays to date as Lt Aldo Raines, the Basterd leader from Kentucky. Despite not appearing in the film as much as I thought he would he still made a huge impact. His performance was powerful, suprisingly funny and overall brilliant. He was undoubtedly the most likeable character in the film and I found him trying to tackle foreign accents hilarious. It was Christopher Waltz however who stole the show in the end. He played Colonel Hans Landa, a charming, confident, cruel, calculating and callous man. He was the best thing about every scene he was in and was another hilarious performer and watching his giddy character's constant change is very entertaining. He was oddly likeable for a bad guy and he had the best lines and moments in the film. He was so good that there were some slow-paced scenes in which I wished he would come back. Tarantino himself once said that the role of Landa was so important that if he didn't find the right person to fit the role then he would've stopped production on the film. Luckily Waltz did an exceptional job and was well worthy of his best actor win at Cannes and he will no doubt get a supporting actor nomination at the Oscar's. The rest of the cast were also great. Diane Kruger, Michael Fassbender,Daniel Bruhl, Til Schweiger and Mélanie Laurent were some of the best of them. Not to mention Eli Roth who was also excellent as the brutal 'Bear Jew'. He also directed the film within a film called Nation's Glory. So overall I thought this was an outstanding film. The direction was magnificent and the cast were all great, with some better than other. Waltz and Pitt were the most memorable and really made the film that little bit better. Definitely QT's best film since 1994 and in my opinion the last line sums up the film. Brad Pitt says 'This might just be my masterpiece' and I believe that this is QT's masterpiece.

I haven't made my mind up about this...I used to like Tarantino and still do in ways, it's just I feel his films are now getting stale by over using two specific things...one is the random conversations that go on forever and lead nowhere, he said once in an interview that real life characters never tall about the 'plot'. This can be fun at times but to be fair I'm in the cinema for 2 hours to watch the plot, if I wanted to watch people have a random conversation I'd sit on a bus. Secondly I'm not one to be dislike violence, loved the use of it in the TV series Rome...but in this film it was just used to cause a reaction and it was overused. The film isn't supposed to be serious...so I'm taking it at face value and because of that I'm only giving it 3. The plot was weak too and it wasn't as funny as it could have been. The Actors did good jobs to be fair.

Its too long, some of the scenes dialogue scenes are overdone, over the top but i liked it. People will either love this movie or hate it. But i am on the lovin side.

I didn't like it.. In all honesty, I felt it was dragged out and I was disappointed completely. Saying that it was very well played, and even though I disliked the gruesome parts, it was done very well overall.

Well, for a movie I expected to hate it wasn't all too bad. There's some genius moments in it, every second the "Basterds" are on screen is gold. Pitt is excellent as ever, Til Schweiger's character is brilliant and Fassbender's performance was a pleasant surprise. Now, onto what I didn't like. It was FAR too long, the first scene drags on for ages. And there's a lot of stuff that just drags out the films run time. For a film called Inglorious Basterds the "Basterds" aren't really on screen all that much. Maybe 50% at best, which is a shame because that ensemble of guys was great. I suppose I'd have to call this my favourite QT film as it's the only one I enjoyed. If some of the filler had been taken out it would be a lot better.

Top class....Tarentino at his very best. This movie has everything - blood and gore, comedy, twists and turns, originality, suspense, action. It's a gem, can't be missed. Far better than other Tarentino productions. While the setting and background are serious and heavy (it's set in France during World War 11), it is portrayed in a light hearted fashion. Acting is superb, with Pitt and Waltz shining. Slightly long but the end is worth waiting for, miss it at your peril!

Very very good, takes the place of Kill Bill 2 as my fave Tarantino film. Less gore made more room for good storytelling.

Classically Quentin, and yet something entirely new, Inglourious Basterds enthralls from the opening credits! The international cast shine, Christoph Waltz is especially engaging as the Nazi Colonel Hans Landa; Brad Pitt pulling off the role of Lieutenant Aldo Raine with an indelible panache. The cinematography dazzles, the story is executed nothing shy of immaculately, bravo!

Brilliant! An amazing cast and story. Christoph Waltz is fantastic. I didn't expect this to be so funny and heart racing. Just might be my favourite Tarantino movie yet.

Thanks movie.ie! Having been a fan of Tarantino's 90's movies I feel he is back on form with this excellent movie. The acting was top class in particular Christopher Waltz as Colonel Landa. A must see movie !

Quentin Tarantino back to form, after the horrible Deathproof, Basterds is a great film, the acting is top notch, expeciallu Christopher Waltz as Colonel Landa who was superb. However, I felt the film was slightly let down by the final scene, violence for the sake of violence?

Tarantino's best movie to date, the man knows how to tell a story and how to build tension. My only complaint would be the violence, theres a lot of it, but this is a Tarantino movie, thats what you expect!

Good movie with some very good scenes. Its far too long & just too self indulgent at times. Christoph Waltz gave by far the best performance in the movie.

Qt is on great form here with his 7th(6th if you don count Kill bILL.2)movie. A perfectly sharp script, very well acted and fantasticly time humour, it makes a great change from Death Proof and the Kill Bills. I absolutly loved this movie.Definatley recommended. Go see it.

A great movie with some superb characters, Pitt, Waltz, Roth and Fassbender in particular steal the show. Some classic dialogue delivered in the way only Tarintino knows how and some tense scenes mixed with comedic moments make this movie very enjoyable! Oh and there is some fantastic gore too!

This is a good tongue n cheek war story that has plenty of entertaining moments. Some are funny others are tense and violent. Brad Pitt plays a great character and puts in a good performance as Aldo but the nazi interrogater steals the show. I just felt that some scenes were drawn out a bit so it doesnt get the full 5 stars from me, but it is well worth watching especially if your a Tarantino fan.

That's the best Tarantino movies I've seen. Forget Pitt, he's good but the cast is awesome. Funny, thrilling, gruesome. It manages to poke fun at old war movie stereotypes without screwing up the movie.
