A must for all who love noirish thrillers, Southcombe’s directorial debut features a stellar cast, headed by Charlotte Rampling and Gabriel Byrne. Rampling plays the titular character, who may hold the key to a murder investigation being conducted by Byrne’s insomniac detective, for she was at the apartment of the victim on the night of his death. Anna’s perspective on the crime makes us doubt the truth of what we see, which makes for a compelling psychological mystery.

    Onionhead

    Byrne is appropriately jaded and world-worn, and Eddie Marsan provides some nice gruff support as a fellow investigator, but I, Anna totally belongs to Rampling at the end of the day. I also want to make quick note of the soundtrack by K.I.D., providing a score that at first wouldn't seem like it'd fit the mood that Southcombe is aiming for but by the end I was surprised by just how well it worked within the context of the story. It kept a nice rhythm going, which was good to have around since even at an 87-minute running time this one can drag a bit at times.

    The drama is played with absolute conviction by Rampling and Byrne, and there is a nice supporting role for Eddie Marsan as Byrne's long-suffering Met colleague, but the story itself is unconvincing.

    A strange one this. Has a couple of great performances, and is nicely slow building. But there are a number of big faults, like a twist that is telegraphed too early and an ending that does not really work, as too much is still left unaswered. But still worth a watch, if somewhat frustrating.

    Now 66, Charlotte Rampling is still a commanding screen presence. Her glacial beauty is ideally suited to her new film I, Anna - a modern film noir set in London. She plays Anna, a lonely divorcee who frequents singles nights looking for a man to connect with. Things take a turn though when one of her suitors (Ralph Brown) ends up dead. Grizzled police detective Kevin (Gabriel Byrne) is on her case, trying to put the pieces together and figure out whether she's guilty or innocent. They start to fall for each other though... Rampling is very good here, a whole range of emotions expressed through her eyes rather than her face. Byrne is good too, even if his character's motivations aren't entirely clear. It's a low-key film that never really hits the target, but it comes close to it several times. After years of working in TV, first-time director Barnaby Southcombe shows promise though. Worth a look for the curious.
