UCI buys 11 Irish cinemas plans IMAX cinema for Dublin

Massive expansion from UCI in the Irish market plus finally news of a Dublin IMAX!

Private equity company Terra Firma, who control the Odeon/UCI cinema chain have purchased 9 existing Irish cinemas alongside the lease for two new cinemas from Entertainment Enterprises, the company controlled by the Butler brothers

The deal includes a number of cinemas already being managed by UCI including Blanchardstown, Coolock and Newbridge plus the Storm cinemas in Cavan, Portlaoise, Limerick, Naas, Waterford and Stillorgan.

The group has also signed a lease for 2 new cinemas, a multiplex in Charlestown and a 6 screen cinema next to the O2/Point Depot in Dublin, there are discussions to include an IMAX cinema screen that will seat 400 people at the O2/Point complex.

Speaking of the investment Guy Hands, chairman of Terra Firma said "Following the recent successful bond issue, we are delighted that Odeon and UCI is making this acquisition which will help drive further earnings growth and further consolidate its position as the number one cinema business in Europe".

    Finally and IMAX screen. Wonder when it will be put up and if that will happen in time for Dark Knight Rises.

    Over a year before Dark Knight Rises is released so if they want to it could happen. Maybe even have it as their opening movie.

    Never been to an IMAX thing so would definitely be interested in trying it out.

    Went to an IMAX in the states last year and would definitely pay extra to see the big movies in IMAX.....hopefully it will happen!!

    Surly I'm not he only one who remembers the IMAX screen that used to be housed in the what is now Cineworld. It didn't last very long.

    They did not because there was no market for them at the time.

    Wonder if they will include Tallaght in this?
    UCI in Tallaght closed years ago if memory serves, and since then it has had "Cinema Opening Soon" boards everywhere lol

    I'm happy to hear this, have been wanting to experience Imax for ages, and hopefully they will have them open for TDKR cos i will be there for that :D
