Declan Cashin picks out just a few of the ones he’s most excited about… 2012 is going to be a great year!
Carnage (February)
Roman Polanski sticks four gifted actors - Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster,
John C. Reilly and the scene-stealing Christoph Waltz - into a cramped
environment and relishes in the tense, blackly comic mayhem that
ensues as two middle-class couples meet in one of their apartments to
discuss a fight between their respective sons. Winslet, in particular,
has one scene that everybody will be talking about.
Chronicle (February)
A bunch of ordinary people get some extraordinary powers, think of the cult TV shows ‘Heroes' or ‘Misfits', but with a much bigger budget.
The Muppets (February)
It's time to play the music, it's time to light the lights...oh you know
how the rest goes. This big screen revival of - and loving homage to -
Jim Henson's heart-"felt" creations sees superfan Jason Segal and his
girlfriend Amy Adams stage a telethon to save the Muppets' beloved
theatre from being demolished by oilman Chris Cooper. This is sure to
administer a Miss Piggy-style karate chop to all the cinematic
competition in mid-February. (Can't wait until February - check out Animal's new website!)
Hansel and Gretal: Witch Hunters (March)
This modern update on the Grimm fairytale sees the ubiquitous Jeremy
Renner and Gemma Arterton play the eponymous, ginger-bread loving
sibling pair, who, some 15 years after their traumatic childhood
incident, have become a formidable team of bounty hunters who track
and kill witches all over the world. Famke Janssen and Peter Stormare
also star in this 3D multi-hyphenate (it's billed as an
action-horror-comedy).
The Hunger Games (March)
Although known in the industry as "the new Twilight", the truth is
that Suzanne Collins' source material novels are far grittier and
gripping than Stephanie Meyers' tales ever were or could be. This
eagerly-anticipated adaptation is set in an alternate apocalyptic
future America and stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, a
young girl who is chosen to compete in the twisted titular televised
contest that pits one youngster against another until one survivor
remains. Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson and Lenny
Kravitz co-star.
This Must Be The Place (March)
Sean Penn plays a mad rock star living in Dublin (no, not Bono) who sets out to find his father's executioner, an ex-Nazi war criminal who is a refugee in the U.S.
Titanic 3D (April)
Kate. Leo. The boat. Now in new-fangled 3D. Just give in, hand over
your money, and enjoy.
Battleship (April)
Peter Berg (Hancock) produces and directs this big screen adaptation
of the naval combat boardgame that stars Taylor Kitsch (who will also
be seen in John Carter, March 9th) as a Naval Office whose ship is
drawn into battle with an alien race known as ‘The Regents'. Alexander
Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, and pop star Rihanna also star.
The Avengers (April)
Joss Whedon is the man with the plastic scoop assembling the biggest
comic book hero pick'n'mix in cinema history. Iron Man, the Hulk,
Thor, Captain America and friends join forces to do battle...oh look,
will the plot really make that much of a difference? We don't like
building our expectations too much, but this can't not be anything but
awesome. Robert Downey Jnr, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris
Hemsworth, Jermey Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel
L. Jackson all appear.
Men In Black 3 (May)
Think of everything you liked about the previous MIB movies (Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, humour, aliens, cool gadgets).... Now add in a time travel plot that sends Will Smith back to the 1960s and we have one of the summers most anticipated movies on our hands.
The Dictator (May)
If the recently-released trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen's latest is
accurate, this could well be the comedy of the year. The comic plays
dictator General Admiral Alladeen, who risks his life to ensure that
democracy doesn't come to his repressed country, the Republic of
Wadiya.
Mirror Mirror (March) and
Snow White and the Huntsman (June)
This is the year of competing Snow White stories. First up is Mirror
Mirror with Lily Collins as the apple-munching ingénue, Armie Hammer
as her Prince Charming, and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Then in
Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart arms up to do battle
against her wicked stepmother Charlize Theron.
Prometheus (June)
Is it an Alien sequel, prequel, reboot, or stand-alone story? We're
not entirely sure as yet, but buzz continues to grow about Ridley
Scott's return to the genre upon which he made an indelible mark 30
years ago with Alien and Blade Runner. Michael Fassbender, Charlize
Theron, Noomi Rapace and Guy Pearce are amongst the spaceship crew who
follow a mysterious message to a new, unexplored planet. We assume
that it doesn't end well.
Jack the Giant Killer (June)
Bryan Singer makes a welcome return to the fold with yet another of
2012's fairytale updates. Nicholas Hoult stars as farmer Jack, who
reignites an ancient war when he unwittingly opens a gateway between
this world and a fearsome race of giants. Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci
and Bill Nighy are part of the heavyweight cast.
